Want to avoid I-70 traffic but still get great mountain views on your hike? Then I recommend Panorama Point. There are several ways to access this view point but my most traveled is from Lair o' the Bear. This route lets you hike along a river and pass a castle before reaching the trail that takes you up to the views.
The trail is a mix of exposure and shade, which helps keep pups from overheating. It’s not too strenuous but gives you some exercise.
Trail Overview
Location: Idledale, CO (Jefferson County)
Distance: 6.66 miles
Ascent: 1,085 feet
Trail Type: Out-an-back
Dog Rules: Dogs must be on leash
Cost: Free
Trail Conditions: As of 3/8/25, mostly clear with patches of snow/ice; human used traction for some downhills (likely clear now)
Snow's Tips
Arrive early, as although the parking lot is large it's a very popular park and it will fill up. Do not park illegally - it is not kind and there is often Ranger enforcement at this trailhead. There are restrooms on-site for the humans and plenty of trees for pups to potty on.
