When the human gets off work early, this doggo gets to adventure! If you’re looking for a quick but rewarding hike, Lichen Peak is the perfect option—especially if you’re racing the sun. Even with some rough I-70 traffic, my pack made it just in time to summit, take a seat, and enjoy a stunning sunset. Watching the sun dip behind the mountains while gazing out over the Denver skyline? That’s a tail-wagging good time!

Trail Overview

  • Location: Golden, CO

  • Distance: 1.75 miles

  • Ascent: 540 feet

  • Trail Type: Out-and-back

  • Dog Rules: Dogs must be on leash

  • Cost: Free

  • Trail Conditions: As of late January, mix of slushy snow, mud, and clear sections

Route Breakdown

The first part of this hike is steep—gaining 430 feet in just 0.6 miles—but it’s short enough that you can always take breaks along the way. We saw hikers of all ages tackling the climb at their own pace. The summit offers incredible panoramic views, making it well worth the effort.

Why You'll Love It

  • Sunset-Worthy Views: Enjoy stunning vistas of the Front Range and Denver skyline.

  • Quick & Efficient: Perfect for squeezing in an adventure before sundown.

Snow’s Take

This hike may be short, but it packs a punch! A good uphill climb, wide-open views, and a chance to watch the sun set behind the mountains? Count me in! If you’re looking for a fast but fulfilling adventure, Lichen Peak is a must—just be ready for a little mud and slush in winter. And don’t forget my treats!
