Just when I thought it was time to swap snow for sunshine, Mother Nature hit me with a plot twist—and honestly, I wasn’t mad about it! This trail offered quiet paths, wide-open views, and the perfect mix of wet sand, mud puddles, and leftover snow to play in after a spring storm. Sometimes the best hikes are the ones where you don’t have to share the trail, and this one delivered a peaceful adventure with plenty of space to roam.

Trail Overview

  • Location: Jefferson County, CO

  • Distance: 3 miles

  • Ascent: 420 feet

  • Trail Type: Loop

  • Dog Rules: Dogs must be on leash

  • Cost: Free

  • Trail Conditions: As of 4/19/25, wet with little snow on the trail

Route Breakdown

The Coyote Song Trail winds through the red sandstone formations that South Valley Park is known for, making it both scenic and approachable for all skill levels. The path is wide and easy to follow, with gentle rolling hills and plenty of spots to stop and take in the views of the foothills. After a spring snowstorm, the trail transforms into a fun mix of textures—mud here, packed sand there, and occasional snowy patches just waiting for pups like me to dive into.

Why You'll Love It

  • Red Rock Views: Dramatic sandstone formations paired with sweeping foothill vistas make this trail visually stunning year-round.

  • Spring Snow Surprise: If you catch it right after a snowstorm, you’ll enjoy a unique mix of snow play and clear trail.

  • Dog-Friendly Stroll: At just 3 miles with modest elevation gain, this is a great trail for pups and people looking for a lighter adventure.

Snow's Take

I wasn’t ready to give up my snow days just yet, so this spring storm was a welcome surprise. The trail was peaceful, the views were beautiful, and I had a blast bounding between puddles and patches of snow. If you want a quick hike close to Denver that still feels like a true adventure, this one’s worth saving—especially after spring weather keeps you guessing!
