What’s your desert vibe? Many visitors flock to the water at Slide Rock State Park, but as a hiking pup, I found plenty to enjoy on the trails—even with dogs restricted from the main swimming area.

When you enter the park, you’ll begin on the paved Pendley Homestead Trail, where you can explore a bit of history: apple orchards, the Pendley Homestead house, tourist cabins, an apple packing barn, and farming equipment from the early 1900s. From there, dog-friendly hikers can connect to the Clifftop Nature Trail, which winds above the famous swim area and offers sweeping desert and canyon views.

Trail Overview

  • Location: Sedona, AZ

  • Distance: 1 mile

  • Ascent: 80 feet

  • Trail Type: Loop

  • Dog Rules: Dogs must be on leash

  • Cost: $20 (Oct - April; higher entrance fee in summer but pets aren't allowed then)

  • Trail Conditions: As of 3/22/25, clear

Route Breakdown

Start your visit with the Pendley Homestead Trail, a short, paved stroll through the historic apple orchards. This easy loop gives a glimpse into the agricultural past of Oak Creek Canyon.

Next, continue to the Clifftop Nature Trail, which runs above the Slide Rock swim area. While pups can’t splash in the creek, this trail still provides gorgeous vantage points of the red rock formations and the clear waters below. At only one mile with minimal elevation gain, it’s an easy, family- and dog-friendly option.

Why You'll Love It

  • Historic Homestead: Apple orchards, barns, and farming relics.

  • Red Rock Views: Overlooks of Oak Creek Canyon and the swim area.

  • Dog-Friendly in the Off-Season: A rare chance to explore this iconic state park with your pup.

Snow's Take

I didn’t miss the swim area one bit—there was too much to sniff and see on the trails! The orchards smelled amazing, the canyon views were beautiful, and it felt like I had a special part of Sedona all to myself.
