Can dogs hike with their humans at Petrified Forest National Park? The answer is a resounding yes! This is one of the few National Parks where pups are welcome on trails, making it a tail-wagging destination for any adventure dog.

My first hike here took me straight into the heart of the badlands on the Blue Mesa Trail, a short but stunning loop that descends into the basin. Along the way, we passed bluish bentonite clay hills, scattered petrified wood, and sedimentary layers that hold millions of years of history. Paleontologists have even discovered fossils here—so you never know what kind of ancient story you’re walking through!

Trail Overview

  • Location: Petrified Forest National Park, AZ

  • Distance: 1 mile

  • Ascent: 160 feet

  • Trail Type: Loop

  • Dog Rules: Dogs must be on leash

  • Cost: National Park Pass or daily entrance fee

  • Trail Conditions: As of 3/22/25, clear and well-maintained

Route Breakdown

The Blue Mesa Trail begins with sweeping views across the badlands before dropping down into the basin. The paved path quickly transitions into a gravel trail that winds through otherworldly blue and purple clay hills. Keep your eyes open for petrified wood scattered along the way—it’s like walking through a natural museum.

The loop itself is short, but the scenery changes constantly, making it feel far bigger than a mile. Since the climb back up is brief, this is a great option for both humans and pups who want big views without a long trek.

Why You'll Love It

  • Dog-Friendly National Park: One of the few U.S. National Parks where pups are allowed on trails.

  • Unique Scenery: Explore colorful badlands and ancient petrified wood.

  • Short & Accessible: A manageable loop with maximum payoff.

Snow's Take

This hike felt like stepping onto another planet! The blue and purple badland hills were unlike anything I’ve seen in Colorado, and the petrified wood made it feel like I was sniffing around an ancient forest frozen in time. Even though it’s short, Blue Mesa packs in so much beauty that you’ll want to slow down and soak it all in. Just don’t forget to follow the B.A.R.K. principles so every pup can keep enjoying trails like this.
