I LOVE cold-weather adventures! Nothing beats a chilly day with the sun shining—it's the perfect combo for a winter outing. Today, my pack and I headed north to explore Barr Lake State Park, a beautiful and peaceful spot known for its incredible birdwatching. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint!
We spotted three bald eagles and one hawk soaring through the sky and perching in the trees. Add in frost-covered branches and a frozen lake, and it made for one breathtaking day!
Trail Overview
Location: Barr Lake State Park, CO
Distance: 2.75 miles
Ascent: 315 feet
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Dog Rules: Dogs must be on leash
Cost: Colorado State Park Pass required
Trail Conditions: As of 1/5/25, clear and dry (dirt path—can get muddy)
Route Breakdown
We started our adventure at the Visitor Center and followed the trail to the boat launch, making a stop at the boardwalk to check out the wildlife viewing blind. The lake was partially frozen, and the crisp air made for an invigorating walk.
Important note: Pups aren’t allowed to hike the entire lake loop due to the nature preserve on one side. You can cross the dam for a bit but will need to turn around at the designated area. No worries, though—the trail is well-marked, so just be respectful and follow the signs!
Why You'll Love It
Amazing Birdwatching: One of the best places near Denver to spot bald eagles, hawks, and other birds of prey!
Quiet & Peaceful: Less crowded than other metro-area state parks—great for a relaxing stroll.
Dog-Friendly Perks: The Visitor Center has fresh water and treats for pups (plus, the volunteers are super friendly)!
Snow’s Take
What a day! I had so much fun watching giant birds soar overhead—I tried to keep up, but my paws just weren’t fast enough! 🦅 The fresh winter air, the sparkling frost, and the friendly volunteers with treatos made this one of my favorite state parks. If you’re looking for a peaceful winter hike (with a side of eagle-spotting), Barr Lake is a must-visit! Just be sure to pack some extra treats for me if you go!
